This week, Drew is joined on the air by Michael Grabell, author of the book Money Well Spent? Michael Grabell is an investigative reporter for ProPublica, a nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to in-depth stories in the public interest.  His investigative work has included stories on President Obama's economic stimulus package, the TSA's body scanners, the Federal Air Marshal Service, the Lance Armstrong doping allegations, chemicals stored near schools and neighborhoods, and a bus fire that killed 23 nursing home patients fleeing Hurricane Rita.  At ProPublica, his work has appeared in USA Today and The Star-Ledger and on NPR, Salon, MSNBC.com, PBS NewsHour, and the CBS Evening News. Before joining ProPublica, he was a reporter covering state and federal courts, police, and aviation security for The Dallas Morning News.  He has also worked for The New York Times, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Greensboro, N.C., News & Record, the Times of Trenton, and the Morris County, N.J., Daily Record.  He has twice been a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. Grabell's first book Money Well Spent?: The Truth Behind the Trillion-Dollar Stimulus, the Biggest Economic Recovery Plan in History was published in January 2012 by PublicAffairs.  Because of his expertise on the stimulus, he has been a guest on CNN, Fox Business, CNBC, C-SPAN, PBS NewsHour, ABC News, CBS News, and the Diane Rehm Show.

This week, Drew is joined on the air by Dr. John B. Taylor, author of First Principles: Five Keys to Restoring America’s Prosperity. John B. Taylor is the Mary and Robert Raymond Professor of Economics at Stanford University and the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Economics at the Hoover Institution. He is Director of the Stanford Introductory Economics Center. He formerly served as director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, where he is now a senior fellow. Taylor’s academic fields of expertise are macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international economics. He is known for his research on the foundations of modern monetary theory and policy, which has been applied by central banks and financial market analysts around the world. He has an active interest in public policy. He served as senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1976 to 1977, as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1989 to 1991. He was also a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Economic Advisers from 1995 to 2001. Taylor served as a member of the California Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors from 1996-98 and 2005-10.

John Tomasi is a Professor of Political Science at Brown University and Director of the Political Theory Project at Brown. He also holds an appointment at the University of Arizona's Center for the Philosophy of Freedom where he is a University Associate and Research Professor. Tomasi received his B.A. from Colby College, his M.A. from the University of Arizona (1990), and his B. Phil., D. Phil. from Oxford University (1993). He has held previous positions at the University Center for Human Values at Princeton, the Department of Philosophy at Stanford, and the Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard. His specializations are political theory and ethics and public policy. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, Tomasi is author of Liberalism Beyond Justice: Citizens Society and the Boundaries of Political Theory (Princeton University Press, 2001) and Free Market Fairness (Princeton University Press, 2012).

This week, Drew and Tim are joined by Allan Meltzer to discuss his new book Why Capitalism? Allan Meltzer is a professor of Political Economy and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and is also a Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. He has served as a consultant for several Congressional committees; the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the U.S. Treasury Department, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the World Bank, foreign governments and central banks. He has been a member of the President's Economic Policy Advisory Board. In 1988-89, he was an acting member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. From 1986 to 2002, he was Honorary Adviser to the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies of the Bank of Japan. In 1999-2000, he served as Chairman of the International Financial Institution Advisory Commission, known as the Meltzer Commission. The Commission proposed major reforms of the International Monetary Fund and the development banks.

Williams is an American economist, commentator, author and academic.  He is the John H. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University, as well as a syndicated columnist and author.  Raised in the housing projects of North Philadelphia, Dr. Williams believes the government’s intervention more often harms rather than helps in issues of race and economy.  He joins us tonight to discuss his two newest books: His autobiography published in 2010 called Up From The Projects, and his newest release, Race & Economics: How much can be blamed on discrimination?

This week, Drew is joined on the show by Roger Bootle, author of the book The Trouble With Markets. Roger Bootle is one of the City of London’s best known economists, having worked in or around the financial markets since 1978. As well as being Managing Director of Capital Economics, he is also a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He was formerly Group Chief Economist at HSBC and, under the previous Conservative government, he was appointed one of the Chancellor’s panel of economic forecasters, the so-called “Wise Men”. He studied Economics at Oxford, and began his career in the academic world as a lecturer in Economics at St Anne’s College, Oxford. He has written many articles and several books on monetary economics. Roger’s latest book, The Trouble with Markets, analyses the deep causes of the recent financial crisis and discusses the threats to capitalism arising from it.
