This week, Drew and Chris are joined by Cheri Dorsey and they discussed Estate Planning.

Cheri focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning, estate administration and trust administration. Her goal is to have a warm ear and a kind heart as she helps individuals and families navigate the difficult issues of planning for disability and death. Cheri advises clients on basic topics such as powers of attorney documents, Advance Directive documents, Last Wills and Testaments and Revocable Living Trusts, as well as more complex topics such as life insurance trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts, charitable remainder trusts, and qualified personal residence trusts.

Cheri has experience assisting clients in fulfilling their charitable wishes, from entering into pledge agreements with organizations, to creating charitable organizations. She also has the unique experience of working with artists and art collectors, guiding them in achieving their goals for the continuity of their collections.

Cheri spends considerable time working with business owners with regard to their succession planning, particularly with respect to transferring interests in family businesses to the next generation through various gifting and other transfer techniques.

Holding the hand of the surviving spouse and other family members after the death of a loved one is one of Cheri’s strengths due to her ability to sympathize. She regularly handles the administration of trusts and estates, and often serves as a fiduciary with respect to those matters.

When Cheri is not helping her clients, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Todd, her daughter, Josie, and her son, Cole, as well as more extended family. The Dorsey family lives in Parkton, Maryland, and they enjoy music, various sports and attending Hunt Valley Church.

MRW - Podcast - Raj Goel (guest) - February 28, 2018

This week, Drew and Tom are joined by Raj Goel.

For almost twenty years, business owners, professionals and retirees concerned about death, disability or other life changing events and the impact they could have upon their loved ones, have actively sought Raj’s counsel in addressing all of their estate planning needs. Aside from Raj's experience and technical skills with these complex and emotional issues, his clients come to him because they know he genuinely cares for them and is willing to go to great lengths to ensure the terms of their estate plans are customized to meet their individual goals. Over the years, this relationship-oriented approach has allowed Raj to build his practice solely by word-of-mouth referrals and is the reason why many other attorneys use him to address their own legal needs.

The following are examples of cases Raj has recently handled:

  • Assisted a business owner in addressing the practical issues of how her business, which is the largest asset she owns, could continue to remain viable if she were to suddenly die or become incapacitated
  • Advised parents on how best to structure their wills and trusts to minimize their estate tax exposure and ensure that the assets will be properly administered for the benefit of their two children, one of which has Down’s Syndrome and the other who will never be capable of making good financial decisions
  • Counseled a widow on how to administer her late husband’s estate, while dealing with a potential challenge to the Will by her step-son
