Drew and Tom are joined by Roemer McPhee.
Roemer McPhee was born in Washington D.C. and resided there for several years while his father was special legal counsel to President Eisenhower. Always interested in writing and history, at age 17 he entered Princeton University, where he studied history and was able to write to his heart’s content about his favorite subject. In 1979 he saw a few articles in Forbes and Barron’s magazines on investor Robert W. Wilson, and was fascinated by Wilson’s success. Since money and finance were another favorite interest of McPhee’s, he entered Wharton Business School and majored in finance.
McPhee found a job working as a trader for Morgan Stanley, and his career in investing began. Now, he works as a private investor and is very active in the futures market and cash markets. McPhee was surprised one day to find that his mother-in-law knew Wilson, the legendary investor who had inspired McPhee. She set up a private meeting between the two men, which turned into a long-term friendship and they got together several times over the years to talk about money, philanthropy, or to mingle at various cocktail parties. Like Wilson, McPhee believes in giving back, and volunteers some of his time to Amnesty International.
Fascinated with Wilson’s work and life, McPhee wanted to write it down and try to answer the question so many others were asking: how did Wilson make so much money? McPhee combined his love of writing, his interest in gathering historical detail, and his knowledge in finance to craft an autobiography that does just that in Killing the Market: Legendary Investor Robert W. Wilson.
In his free time, McPhee likes to play squash and tennis, and enjoys cycling. He also loves to sail and travel. Aside from his new book on Wilson, McPhee is the author of the book The Boomer's Guide to Story: A Search for Insight in Literature and Film, in which he writes about themes in story that mirror everyday life. McPhee is married and has one son. He lives in New York City.
